It's a good thing bedbugs don't carry bubonic plague.

Wait, I predict it's only a matter of time before they do.  Wherever there's an ecological niche, nature will fill it.

We are having a difficult time eradicating bedbugs, partly because of social shame of being infested, partly because of our attachment to material possessions.

This was inspired by pessimism of curing or preventing AIDS and HIV.  HIV has succeeded so far because of a social weakness: our shame and awkwardness about sexuality. Even if we defeat it, I worry it'll be Whack A Mole: the next disease will come along to take advantage of the next "crease" exactly where society is weakest.
