Is there a different subset of government services that would make people just as happy as the current set, but cost less?  Cynically, bread and circuses to keep the Roman mob pacified, but that probably won't work in the long run.

Government-run dating site and public toilets were my other bad idea: once people's basic needs are met, they might be willing to give the government a pass on everything else, like, say, schools, roads, and social security.
