Do we have more to fear from Terrorism, or from Random Acts of Violence? I suspect the latter.
The two are probably related, with terrorists with political agendas but no balls recruiting "Angry Young Men" looking to commit random acts of violence despite not caring for the political agenda.
If these angry young men are ultimately the perpetrators, then cultures with strong preferences for male children, achieved with sex-selective abortions and female infanticide (e.g., India, China) are in for a load of trouble in a generation or so as the gender ratio becomes unbalanced and there are lots of unpaired men. (Is this a modern problem? Certainly sex-selective abortions are new, but what about female infanticide? Was maternal mortality due to childbirth historically so high that one female child is preferable to none?)
This hypothesis suggests an unusual method of combating both terrorism and random acts of violence over the long term: policies to equalize the gender imbalance or even skew it in the opposite direction.
Reminds me of the calming effect seen at Red Sox championship celebrations.
