The space fountain is a facinating method for elevating objects into space, and in my opinion, more practical than the popular space elevator.
A space elevator is entirely useless unless it is fully completed to a mind boggling 24,000 miles tall, but it would more likely end up being something like 60,000 miles tall. It's an all or nothing affair, being built top down. The tallest building so far is about 0.5 miles tall.
In contrast, a space fountain is "real" and usable at any height, even toy models. So there should be an ongoing competition for the tallest working "space" fountain, which hobbyists could initially compete. To my limited knowledge, even a toy a few inches tall launching pellets mechanically would hold the record at the moment.
What is the tallest water fountain? (An unfair comparison)
A space fountain's ultimate safety protocol is complete (robotic) disassembly which can (and should) be tested regularly because it may be operated to any height.
Also Lofstrom launch loop.
