A school is 3 things from the point of view of the parent: 1. intellectual education to teach what the parent may not know, 2. a day care place that is safe and will take care of the child while the parent is busy with a job, and 3. substitute parent behavioral education of how to be an adult in society.
Be clear about these roles to everyone: the child, parent, teacher. It's more than just point 1.
Point 3 is interesting, because, among other things, challenging authority is a key skill we want adults to have, but it makes life unpleasant for teachers and administrators.
Point 2 understandably can make school like a prison unless effort is made to make it a pleasant place.
