was the political system within which Hitler and his deputies rose to power particularly good at rewarding competent people with power?
if so, should we copy those mechanisms? selecting competent people as leaders seems like a good idea. but maybe we shouldn't copy those mechanisms if we want to avoid becoming (even more like) Nazi Germany. but that means something deep: the seeming kakistocracy of how our government selects leaders might be there for a very important reason.
if not, it's nightmarish to imagine what the Nazis could have accomplished had they actually been competent.
