Take a popular computer game and explain how it was made, as instruction on computer programming.
The instruction is probably organized top down, first explaining the broad design but ultimately explaining the nitty gritty computer code. The student may "drill down" to as much detail as wanted in a self-paced course. Use the "hook" of the exciting, even addictive, game to keep up interest through the inevitably difficult and frustrating education process.
Unlike traditional documentaries which gloss over the boring or difficult-to-explain parts, this explains within the mindset, if somewhat fanciful, for the student to ultimately be able to make a similar (or better!) game himself or herself.
